Warrior: Warrior hits all the cliches you would imagine in a movie like this but adds far better performances and contemporary sincerity to the macho emotions of the main characters. It’s much better than you would think.
Young Adult: Some great scenes and moments and a perfect performance by Charlize Theron are eventually cut down by a confused, totally un-realistic script by Diablo Cody.
A Separation: Just like everyone says, it’s great. It’s a perfect film. Perfect. It’s an Iranian Dardenne brothers film. I mean, it’s not. But, that’s what it feels like.
Friday Night Lights: Andrea’s been watching this show so it’s been on in the background but, I was lucky enough to see Connie Britton in person at the Portlandia premiere and she is pretty stunning. The most beautiful mom EVER put on TV.
Hardcore: Paul Schrader’s second directorial effort takes George C. Scott into the seedy underbelly of the sexual exploitation trade in Los Angeles. It’s an interesting subject and Schrader is a great writer but as a director he’s pretty stiff. Scott famously wouldn’t come out of his trailer to act until Schrader promised him that he would never direct a movie again. You can kind of feel for Scott as you watch him slog his way through the film to it’s completely ludicrous ending.
Ace in the Hole: (spoiler alert) Always love a movie where the main character bites it in the end. Young Adult should have ended that way. Patton should have murdered her in some weird, shut-in psychopathic way. No, he shouldn’t have. But, that’d be interesting, right? No? No.
Tonight: Going to try and convince Andrea to come with me to a Lucio Fulci gore film at 92Y Tribeca presented by my new favorite film blog, Not Coming to a theater Near You. (Probably not going to happen)
